Belize is a small nation with a population of just 276,000. Situated on the eastern coast of Central America, it has a shoreline that stretches along the Caribbean Sea. The Caribbean coast has some 450 islets and islands known locally as cayes, pronounced “keys” It is home to the longest barrier reef in the western hemisphere.
One can marvel at the exotic rain forests, accessible wildlife, and exciting outdoor activities. This particularly is a birder’s paradise with a range of 356 species. If you’re lucky you might get to see a jaguar in its thick forests. April is the season when whale sharks are a magnet for those seeking exhilarating dives.
Tourists that visit are more the budget traveler rather than the extravagant spenders. Anne stayed in the Chan Chich Lodge in northern Belize situated amongst the Maya burial mounds. . The property offered numerous cleared hiking trails and walks around the Maya ruins.
The clear waters of the Caribbean Sea are a further treat. One can charter a boat and sail to Twin Cayes or the Laughing Bird Caye; a protected World Heritage Site. Alongside one can enjoy snorkeling or diving.
