Imagine cycling in the midst of so much of traffic that every faster thing wants to honk you out of its way!Shanghai is situated Yangtze River Delta in East China. Simon Louisson cycled in the thick of shanghai traffic and reveled in it. A choice neither preferred nor recommended for tourists but Simon thought if so many locals survived it, why not him. He bought his cycle for 200 yuan ($40) plus 10 yuan for a lock at a shop in Fangbank Road West. November weather is perfect for cycling and once you get going a most pleasurable experience.
Positives: Many of Shanghai’s streets have cycle lanes and one covers more of the city on the bike without getting tired. Best route for cycling is Jinling Donglu road. The old French Concession area is recommended as a quiet area for cycling.
Worries: Speeding, silent Chinese electric scooters and mopeds share the cycle lanes. Stopping buses and turning cars. People hardly follow traffic lights and lane cutting are common practice. Cyclists are banned on the arterial roads.
Essentials: A good street map
Well so next time you are in Shanghai explore it from the seat of a cycle but don’t cycle after dark lighting is definitely a problem.
