The Cheoah is a wonderful river that American Whitewater, Western Carolina Paddlers, Carolina Canoe Club, and many outfitters and other clubs fought tirelessly to bring back to life.

The Santeetlah Lake hydro plant began releasing more water last year, required under Alcoa Power’s federal license to operate the plant. For thrill-seekers, that means whitewater rafting alternatives in the Carolinas have expanded.

After a mild start in the first few miles, the creek narrows. At many points, paddlers cannot see the next set of rapids coming. The many years without regular high flows allowed small trees to grow among the boulders, creating unusual obstacles. In one section, the river drops 134 feet in half a mile.
This year, the water flows four days in April, six in May, two in July, one in September and one in November.
