Nantahala is a river in western North
Carolina in the United States, near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Some have said that the word “Nantahala” comes from the phrase “Land of the Noonday sun” in Cherokee. The river runs through a gorge where, in spots, the sun may only penetrate during mid-day.
Over thousands of years, the swift currents of the Nantahala River have slowly carved an incredible gorge in the mountains of western North Carolina. The Nantahala River offers the thrill and excitement of riding river rapids in a raft, canoe or kayak.
