The main crater is 250 m deep, two km wide and sometimes contains a lava lake. It is one of Africa’s most active volcanoes. It is within the Virunga-Nation Park’s areal. Almost about 100 parasite-cones are to be found on the slopes of the volcano, and they reach as far as to the Kivu-lake. The Goma-observatory is situated 18 km South of the main-crater.
The volcano, one of eight along the borders of Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, has a long history of activity. It is still active and its last eruption took place this year.
