Arenal volcano

Location: 10°27′48″N, 84°42′12″W, Alajuela Province, Costa Rica

Elevation: 1,657 metres

Type: Active Stratovolcano

It was presumed to be extinct until July 29, 1968 when it erupted after approximately 400 years of dormancy. The eruption wiped out the town of Tabacon and killed 87 people. It has been in continuously erupting since then.

The West face of the volcano is the most active side at the present. The perfect cone is visible from most anywhere in the area, but if you want a good view of an eruption, your best bet is to stay in one of the “observatory” type lodges, and stay up late or get up with the sun. The clouds tend to move in soon after sunrise.
